The future isn’t created by people who simply adapt to change. It’s created by people willing to build what doesn’t yet exist.
Changemakers can be entrepreneurs, business leaders, professionals, investors, educators, artists, nonprofit leaders, policymakers, scientists, community builders, parents, and everyday people who create meaningful, measurable, and lasting positive change.
Today’s world faces enormous challenges – from economic inequality and climate change to discrimination, xenophobia, financial inclusion, rapid advances in artificial intelligence, and growing social polarization.
These challenges require more than awareness.
They require people willing to imagine better solutions and work toward building them.
That is the work of a Changemaker.
While many existing definitions focus primarily on nonprofit organizations or social activism, I believe Changemakers exist everywhere.
They may:
- Build businesses that address gaps and transform industries
- Create wealth that funds meaningful impact for future generations and society
- Influence culture and societal narratives through media, storytelling, and education
- Reshape financial systems and institutions
- Innovate from within existing organizations as intrapreneurs
- Strengthen communities through everyday leadership
- Help others discover their own capacity to create change
At its core, a Changemaker creates positive change that lasts.
Below I’ll share how I define a Changemaker, what makes someone a Changemaker, examples of Changemakers, how to recognize a Changemaker Brand, why I believe anyone can become one, and why Changemakers matter more than ever.
How I Define a Changemaker…
To me, a Changemaker is someone who refuses to accept that “this is just how things are.”
They see what’s possible.
They build what doesn’t yet exist.
They empower others, and they transform systems instead of simply operating within them.
A Changemaker is someone who sees the possibility for a better future and takes purposeful action to create lasting positive change – empowering others, cultivating resources, and building solutions that improve people, communities, industries, the planet or society. They are:
One who sees what’s possible and is unwilling to standby, be passive, or see what happens…they are:
A builder, a result-seeker, a mover, and shaker.
Someone inspired to see barriers, challenges, and destruction as opportunities – one who wants to wake up everyday focused on building what’s next.
A dreamer, a visionary, but one who is not naive. They have seen darkness. They have known evil, dehumanization, violence, and grave harm to both people and planet.
And that is exactly why they choose each day to build something better. They refuse to lose hope. They refuse to accept death without the rebirth. They think 10 steps ahead – and focus on creating that.
An entrepreneur, a savvy strategist, one who is capable of garnering the necessary resources to effectuate change.
A leader, one who embodies courage in the face of – not absence of fear, who does not seek to be perfect but instead embraces their fullest humanity to show up and create the impact their purpose has put them on this planet at this very moment to lead.
This is the way of the Changemaker.
This is the one who builds what’s next.
What Makes Someone a Changemaker?
Being a Changemaker has very little to do with your job title, current reality, or access to resources.
It has everything to do with your orientation toward the world.
Changemakers tend to share several characteristics:
- They see opportunities where others see obstacles.
- They take responsibility instead of waiting for someone else.
- They build solutions instead of complaining about problems.
- They think long-term.
- They continuously learn and evolve.
- They create value instead of seeking recognition.
- They empower others rather than trying to become the hero.
Most importantly…
They understand that meaningful change happens through consistent action – not perfect ideas or execution.
Examples of Changemakers
Some changemakers become globally recognized.
Others quietly transform the lives of hundreds of people within their own communities.
Both matter.
Examples include:
- A social entrepreneur building a company that mitigates some environmental harm.
- A financial coach helping first-generation families build generational wealth.
- A teacher creating innovative ways to inspire students.
- A doctor improving healthcare access, or a wellness practitioner creating new forms of healing.
- An artist shifting cultural conversations.
- A software developer building technology that increases accessibility.
- A corporate leader changing how employees are treated.
- A local volunteer organizing neighbors around a shared vision.
You don’t have to change the entire world.
Changing one community, or even one life, can change generations.
What Is a Changemaker Brand?
A Changemaker Brand is more than a logo, color palette, or social media presence.
It is the public expression of your purpose.
It communicates not only what you do and who you help, but what you stand for, the vision of what future you’re helping create, and why people should trust you to lead that change.
The strongest Changemaker Brands position themselves as the obvious choice because their expertise, values, and vision align.
People don’t simply buy their services or products. They buy into the future they’re building.
Can anyone become a Changemaker?
Absolutely. I believe changemakers are not born. They are developed.
Every person has the ability to influence and serve the people around them.
The question isn’t whether you’re capable of creating change. The question is whether you’re willing to take responsibility for the gifts, experiences, and opportunities you’ve been given.
Every meaningful movement in history began because ordinary people decided to act.
The same is true today.
Why Changemakers Matter More Than Ever
We are living through one of the most transformative periods in human history.
Technology allows one person’s ideas to reach millions. Artificial intelligence is reshaping industries. Global challenges require increasingly collaborative solutions.
At the same time, trust in institutions continues to shift, creating new opportunities for individuals to lead with authenticity, expertise, and purpose.
Never before has it been easier – or more necessary – for thoughtful leaders to share their knowledge and build movements online.
And the world doesn’t simply need more content. It needs more courageous ideas and thought leadership from Changemakers.
Building a Better Future Together
Organizations and people around the world are increasingly recognizing that business can be a powerful force for positive change.
For example, the B Lab global movement has certified thousands of companies as B Corps® based on rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency, demonstrating that business success and societal impact can reinforce one another. (And we at International Empowerment® are very proud to be a Certified B Corp®!)
Similarly, the United Nations developed the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), providing a shared global framework for addressing poverty, inequality, education, climate action, peace, and economic opportunity.
The idea that purpose and profit can work together has also been explored through concepts like the Purpose Economy, which drive home the idea that meaning and contribution are becoming central drivers of modern work and innovation.
I believe the next generation of Changemakers will build at the intersection of purpose, technology, entrepreneurship, and human connection online.
They won’t simply respond to the future. They’ll help create it.
How to Start Building Your Changemaker Brand
Building a powerful brand doesn’t begin with just choosing colors, designing a logo, or creating content.
It begins with positioning.
Before people buy from you…
Before they trust you…
Before they follow your work…
They need to understand one simple question: Why you?
That’s why every successful Changemaker Brand begins with clear positioning.
Once your positioning is clear, your messaging, offers, content, marketing, and business strategy become dramatically easier to develop.
If you’re ready to become the obvious choice in your field while building meaningful impact, I’d love to help.
