We don’t just need more voices online. We need the people with the expertise, ideas, and vision to help shape what comes next.
Something we’ve been obsessed with lately is this idea that as more social impact leaders and experts share their voices online – where we can reach people worldwide, for free – the more social change can be created.
Social Impact Leaders Are Stuck in an Echo Chamber
After all the destruction we’ve seen the past 20 months, we still see most professionals and experts who have the potential to lead, rethink systems, and build what’s next hanging out mostly in places where other like-minded professionals hang out. Yes, places like LinkedIn, BlueSky, or within their own professional networks – where it can start to become quite an echo chamber.
We need social impact leaders, advocates, and experts to take up space, share their ideas, and lead conversations in the places where the majority of the public already spends its time.
Where the Public Already Spends Its Time
Yes, we’re talking platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, which each have roughly 8-10x the monthly active audience of LinkedIn.
Compare LinkedIn’s about 310 million monthly active users to:
- Facebook – about 3.07 billion monthly active users
- Instagram – about 3 billion monthly active users
- YouTube – about 2.85 billion monthly active users
Building a Personal Brand as an Expert, Not an Influencer
The first response we usually get on this topic is understandably “but I never set out to be an influencer.”
That is not what we’re talking about. Building an online presence to share your voice is not the same thing as becoming an influencer.
What the “I Am Jane Doe” Movement Shows Us About Social Change Online
As we are seeing the mass “I am Jane Doe” movement and uprising exponentially grow online, starting with Instagram – and now moved to the streets demanding constitutional change to adopt the Equal Rights Amendment – we can’t help but get excited about what’s possible if more social impact leaders were to start sharing their thoughts and ideas on social media platforms outside LinkedIn.
This is the power of what’s possible when you start to show up online and build a personal brand – it gives you a platform to contribute to and help lead change.
It’s Not Enough
There is an incredible opportunity to plug in to this moment and build similar movements online right now. And we’re starting to see more and more independent journalists, advocates, and experts realizing this opportunity and starting to build an online presence on these platforms. But it’s not enough.
What would happen if more social impact leaders started to raise their voices online?
We don’t just need more voices online. We need the people with the expertise, ideas, and vision to help shape what comes next.
