The world doesn’t need more noise and attention seekers online. It needs more people with the clarity and courage to lead on what actually matters.
This week, I’ve been thinking about the difference between visibility and presence – and why so many brilliant changemakers are choosing the wrong one.
Visibility in and of itself says: look at me. Presence says: I see you.
One chases an audience. The other builds relationships, and a community.
The most effective changemakers I know aren’t the loudest voices in the room. They’re the most consistent, powerful ones. They show up online with a clear point of view, week after week, and master their positioning and message so they can stop the scroll, call in dream clients, and create worldwide impact.
Building an online changemaker brand is about amplifying your leadership, not seeking attention. I’ve noticed we often conflate these. Then, block ourselves from stepping into our limitless leadership potential online because we are concerned we’ll be perceived as superficial, desperate, and attention-seeking.
This leaves so many of us with the potential to lead what’s next underutilized and limited in our potential and impact – despite having the greatest tool available to make worldwide change in the very palms of our hands.
That’s why…
…The most dangerous thing a changemaker can do is confuse being loud with being known.
While visibility for the sake of visibility is a one-way, often self-focused effort, presence is about relationships community: showing up in service of the people we’re meant to help, consistently – not only to share insights and expertise – but also, to listen, learn, collaborate, and create change, together.
This week, ask yourself: am I striving to become visible, or present? The answer will shape the entire brand you build online.
